Hello, I’m Rick Romano, welcome to my web site of pencil art. I'm an Alabama pencil portrait artist and I believe the pencil alone can produce a finished work of art.  Almost all of the work you will see here is done with a # 2 pencil.  I’m particularly interested in portraiture and sports play-action.

I have a special love for black and white photography and have logged many hours in my home darkroom prior to taking up pencil art.  The influence of making fine art photographic portrait prints has greatly influenced my realistic drawing style.

I try to bring the same principals to the drawing board that I did with my photography.  To appreciate a good black and white image one should look for some solid black, pure white and every shade of gray in between.

I believe color has certain applications and I appreciate its proper use.  You’ll even find here in my web site a full color pencil drawing done by me and small touches of color in some of my other work.  But think of this: do you believe Ansel Adams photographs would be as famous as they are if his images were in color?   My point is there is something special about well done black and white imagery.

 I’ve tried every medium but keep coming back to pencil.  It provides a certain feel, range of tones and precision I’ve been unable to obtain from other mediums.  Thanks for visiting; I hope you enjoy these works.
