About the Artist

Rick Romano

Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Rick is a self-taught artist with no formal training.  Rick only began to take his drawing seriously in 1998, although he has been drawing since he was in elementary school.  Rick’s works are exclusively in pencil, specializing in portraiture of people and animals.

Recently the Bear Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa accepted his collection of his Paul Bear Bryant drawings as well as his drawings depicting some The University of Alabama’s most memorable plays.

Rick is a regular participant in the annual “Ask the Experts” program held and sponsored by the Paul Bear Bryant Museum each spring.  This program attracts some 250 local grade school students and is designed to inspire children to pursue art to the best of their ability.

Master pencil artists Paul Calle, John Nelson and J.D. Hillberry have influenced Rick.  He continues to strive to master advanced drawing techniques and even more realism in his drawings.  Rick’s style of drawing takes a great deal of time and patience.  It is not unusual for him to spend well over 100 hundred actual drawing hours on a single work.

Romano Art Show

Here I am speaking to a group of students at the Paul Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa at their annual “Art with the Experts” event.  I am surprised at the level of attention I get when I tell them I use the same pencil they have at their desk to draw all of these pictures!  They bombard me and the other 3 artists with questions.  I look forward to this event each year.
